Fruitonauts
For Fruitonauts, a brand by Nextgen Materials, we developed a strategy for an innovative material made from orange peel biomass. The project included a design audit, customer research, trend and competitor analysis, and business model development. The result was a market implementation roadmap – from technology to communication and commercialization.
Challenge
| The Fruitonauts brand, created by the startup Nextgen Materials, aims to revolutionize the leather goods and textile-upholstery industries with its innovative material – fruit leather made from orange biomass. This product is designed as an eco-friendly alternative to natural and synthetic leathers, addressing the growing demand for sustainable fashion and ethical production. The company’s goal was to develop a material ready for mass production that meets high aesthetic, functional, and technological standards while aligning with the principles of a circular economy. The fashion and leather goods industry, the primary target for Fruitonauts, has a significant environmental impact, generating massive waste and contributing to a high carbon footprint. Introducing alternative materials is a vital step toward reducing the negative environmental effects of this sector. |
Approach
The project began with a comprehensive design audit, analyzing production processes, assessing the company’s technological readiness, and identifying its market potential. Market research, including customer surveys and interviews, was conducted to better understand the needs and expectations for this new material. Through workshops with the Fruitonauts team, key challenges and development areas were identified. The entire production process was mapped out, from sourcing biomass from orange peels to processing it and testing material properties like flexibility, durability, and water resistance.
Next, a competitive analysis was performed, comparing alternative eco-friendly materials in terms of features, production costs, and market adaptability. This was complemented by identifying key industry, social, and technological trends that could influence the success of the new product, including the growing interest in sustainable fashion, the popularity of vegan materials, and advancements in waste-to-product technologies.
Based on the gathered insights, various business model scenarios were designed. These included potential commercialization strategies, sales channels, and methods for building customer relationships. The team focused on solutions that not only promoted sustainability but were also competitive in terms of pricing and functionality compared to traditional materials.
Results
The provided document outlined the company’s future development directions, enabling the planning of the new product’s market introduction and fostering collaboration with potential clients. The strategy opened up opportunities for Fruitonauts to seek financial support from both public and private sources, which could aid the implementation of the innovative material.
The communication plan emphasized the product’s unique qualities and sustainable nature, supporting the growth of eco-friendly fashion. The strategy strengthened the brand’s market position as an innovator in the field of sustainable materials, providing a solid foundation for further initiatives in circular economy and ESG.
